Founder of Sutra Foundation & Malaysian Cultural Dance Icon
Datuk Ramli Ibrahim has set dance stages ablaze from Chennai to Paris for more than three decades. His rigorous training in ballet, modern, and Indian classical dance reflects his multi-faceted approach to the Arts. As the artistic director of the Sutra Dance Theatre, he has choreographed stunning works and nurtured some of the brightest dance talents from Malaysia. He has been instrumental in transforming the dance scenario in Malaysia by boldly charting new paths and he is known for single-handedly establishing Odissi as a widely appreciated dance form in Malaysia. He studied Odissi under the late Guru Debaprasad Das and on the latter’s demise, continued with his foremost disciple, Guru Gajendra Kumar Panda.
Datuk Ramli is also the recipient of the Fulbright Distinguished Artist Award in 1999, among his other accolades. He has steered successfully the International Odissi festival, Stirring Odissi ’08, and was conferred the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (2011). He is acknowledged as a ‘Living Heritage’ by the Government of Malaysia in 2012, and is presently the Chairman of Sutra Foundation. He recently had a successful production and tour of ‘Krishna, Love Re-invented’ in Malaysia, the United States, Canada and India.
